They all should work together. The thing to watch for is the couplers. There is the hook & horn and knuckle type. Go to the hobby store for details or get a book for details. Be aware that the European trains are way different Marklin Fleischmann etc. American are 12 volt dc and the Euros are ac. You will want to find about DCC too.

MOST HO Scale (or N Scale for that matter) manufacturers that sell in the USA comply with the standards of the NMRA (National Model Railroad Association) regarding power and track gauge / profile.
AS the first answerer pointed out… there ARE differences between couplers, though MOST have now gone to the standard of a knuckle coupler. You CAN buy after-market couplers to get all the couplers on your layout to match.
MANY locomotives are now DCC ready or DCC equipped… and are really a boon if you want to run a "life-like operation".
I have NOT worked with Lionel in HO… but I have Atlas, Bachmann, Athern, and Kato equipment with an MRC DCC system.

Typically the American manufacturers will all work plug and play with Bachmann. Athearn, Life Like (now walthers), Athearn just to name a few all work fine together. Some cars however take different radius curves so watch out for real long cars (over 9" long) if you are using 18" radius curves.

Basically all Ho Train sets will run on the Ho Guage track. If you are going to multiple power units you should try to stay with the same manufacture. There is a way around that and that is to go with a digital command system, but that will take programming each diesel so that they will run together.

Bachman diesels are ok, but try for the spectrum brand for they are already set up to take DCC control. proto 2000 are pretty good diesels and they will run with Kato or Athern Genisus.
