Model Railroad Scale HO: Making Roads For Model Railroads?
Author: admin | Category: model railroad scaleWhat do you think is the best way to make roads for a model railroad when I'm using a model railroad scale ho.
City streets and roads aren't too hard, for ho scale, you have to remember to make the pot holes too! I use a thinned wash of Grimy black paint and some well sifted ballast. Roads are like railroad beds only wider. If you look at the local roads and take pictures, you will be able to break them down into their elements. Model railroading lasts a lifetime.

Bob,
Here's a technique I've used
to simulate asphalt roads.
If you're a smoker…,
save up all your ashes in a jar…,
just the ash…, no unburnt tobacco,
(any ash will work…, burn some paper to ash).
Once you have a good amount,
place a marble in the jar and twirl it around
to totally pulverize the ash into a powder.
Prep the 'road' surface
and (this is the bad part)
mask off what you don't want painted.
Spray the road
with a good thick layer of flat black enamel,
and then sift on the ash powder….,
now go away.
Couple hours later,
use a hand vacuum to pull up the loose
and gently blow away the rest
too see your new old road.
You can 'score' through the ash
to make tar lines, cracks, whatever.
Just give it a light seal with (hairspray),
or something thin.
This will darken it slightly…,
so go a little heavy on the effect.
Works for me,
Zoë
